Located at 2700 Webster Street, Houston, this early childhood center is designed as a pre-k school for children from infant up to 5-year-olds. The neighborhood this school is situated in, the historical Third Ward, has long been a predominantly African American community. In the second half of last century the Third Ward experienced continuous loss of population followed by the desegregation, and the ensued decline of economy within the community. In recent decades the Third Ward has been a target of gentrification as the younger generation starts to move back into the district, creating demands for schools of lower age groups within the neighborhood. This project is an attempt to fuse the traditional Shotgun House typology has had long existed in the community and Montessori pedagogy, re-imagining the pre-k school as a flexible program.
